Why some shops do paint correction before a ceramic coating seems to be a question we get asked every week. So let’s actually talk about it.
Often confused with buffing, paint correction is a more fine-tuned process that requires real time, labor, and skill. It uses paint measurements, test spots, specific pad / compound / polish combinations, and advanced machine-polishing techniques to remove oxidation (sun damage), swirl marks, scratches, and other blemishes from your vehicle’s clear coat.
The result is restored shine, gloss, reflection, and clarity. It’s the correction process that determines how much of a visible improvement a ceramic coating will make on your paint.
Paint correction is not required for us to apply a ceramic coating. It’s still recommended for best results. We don’t need a swirl-free, scratch-free paint job to bond a coating — but we do need a contaminant-free surface for maximum bonding.
Paint correction acts as a final decontamination step. It “cleans the clear coat” and guarantees proper bonding with the ceramic coating that follows.
Ceramic coatings are known for adding and maintaining an unmatched level of gloss and shine. But they do not hide or cover up the paint defects we just mentioned. If your clear coat has swirls, scratches, or oxidation, a coating will lock those in — with more shine on top.
What are you hoping to get out of having your vehicle ceramic coated? Long-term protection? Added shine? Ease of maintenance? No more waxing? All of the above? Your honest answer determines whether correction belongs in the conversation.
Three things drive the recommendation:
If you’re not sure where your paint sits today, send us a few photos or stop by the shop. We’ll measure the clear coat and tell you straight whether correction will meaningfully change the outcome — or whether you can put that budget into a higher-tier coating instead.
